So, if I work 40 hours a week, does that count as an "addiction", too?

Believe me I know exactly how you feel. My wife started playing in Jan 08. I even supported her in it. She used to play the "old" warcraft games that weren't on-line. That was harmeless enough. But the on-line game opens up a whole new venue. She would play sometimes 18 hours a day. So no one better tell me it's not addictive. Even she will tell you she was (still is as far as I'm concerned). She definetly doesnt play as often but still squezzes in an 12 hour day when she can. She used to "flirt" with the guys that she played with (very few women in the guild) which I could handle at first. Then the questions and stuff got more and more personal. Then I blew up one night because I overheard a conversation (her side only). Well maybe it is my jealousy or insecurities that I have to deal with but I let her have it for the most part. She assures me that nothing is going on or would have because she is not that type of person. Right now I am looking for a hacker that can rob her blind and DESTROY ALL of her characters and anything else that they can do. So am I being terrible on doing that. I don't know but it would make me feel better.

That kind of playtime is ... addiction. There's no other word for it, really. And since it's not a physical addiction, like nicotine or whatever, there's something emotional behind it.

I played for a long time. Obsessively. One day I took a good look at myself and stopped. I've spent a lot of time since thinking about how it got a hold of me like that ...

Part of what's attractive about WoW is that the time goes by so quickly while you play. And it masks any real-world pain or worry while you're playing. If you're deployed in Iraq, it's safe to say that your wife probably has a lot of worries, and wants the time to pass quickly until the day you get back. Getting other people involved, even young'uns, just makes the addiction feel more 'normal'.

I don't know you or your situation beyond what you described, so apologies if I've made assumptions that don't apply; I'm just trying to help. Thanks for your service to our country.

I am currently deployed to Iraq. My wife plays WOW much to my disliking. Every time I tell her I am going to leave, she promises to cut back playing time. Her father is grossly overweight because all he does is play WOW. Recently, my two sons were spending time with my wife's parents for summer vacation. My father-in-law sent my 8 year old home with his old laptop so he could play with him. My wife emailed me this information and I bombarded her with a lot of bottled up frustration over my past year at home with her playing too much. I told her to take a serious look at her life and even that she was overweight because all she did was play that game. My wife doesn't cook or clean much. Over the past year home she made 5 meals at most. It seems like all I can resort to is telling her that I will leave her if she doesn't quite and I keep warning her. Is there anything else I should do? Doesn't it seem like an 8 year old playing on line games is a bit much? I feel like he should be riding his bike or playing baseball.
