Ok, I know that the only way you can help someone is if they realize they have a problem themselves. But what if they don't think they have a problem?
My brother (28 years old!) is still living at home, playing wow upwards of 12 hours a day (from what I've seen while over, and from family accounts). He gets angry when anyone questions his playing, skips meals, or eats fastfood while playing, has gained 50lbs, rarely goes out, and is generally quite a bitch to be around. I'm also fairly certain he has met a girl online playing this game (he's done it before, total fiasco, very strange person showed up at my parent's house).
I think he has a problem, my family thinks he has a problem, and his friends (not many left) think he has a problem.
It's so frustraiting to see someone with so much potential waste it away infront of a useless video game.
I would love any suggestions anyone has to give to help him see that he has a problem.
p.s. He has his own computer he plays on (laptop and desktop) and pays with his own credit card, so trying to cancel the subscription is not really an option.
p.p.s. Whats with the headphones with the microphone? can these people talk to each other?

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Thu, April 19, 2007 - 8:42 AMSounds like you'll need to have an intervention. If everyone feels the same way they need to address it. Does he have a job? Does he pay rent? 18 was 10 years ago maybe it's time to kick him out of the house. Granted my older brother has some issues that keep him from being able to do that and he is 40. Somehow someone is enabling him to play that game for 12 hours straight. That enabling has to stop. Get together with everyone and come up with a plan. Remove him from his niche, make his plans for the day and make him grow up. Simply saying stop doing that won't do anything. He'll need activities to keep him busy. Summer is here take him out. OOh have him try paintball. It'll use the same tactics and skills he has learned in the game and he'll be social, active, and away from the computer.
Reguarding the headphones with the speaker, yes he is speaking with other people sometimes over fourty at a time from all over the world. They are working as a complex team. He is learning some usefull skills, now it's time to apply them to real life. :)
Good luck! :) -

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 8:33 AMJeez, 28, that's awful.
Why haven't your parents done anything?! If Daniel read this post maybe he'd understand a little more and quit his crying.
You've just gotta make him see that it's all pointless. Try get him into some other activities.
It'll be hard though, especially if hes into WoW that much. Raiding, teamspeak, even girlfriends? I don't see this being easy, infact I'd be suprised if you changed him at all.
Giving him an ultimatum may be the only solution. -

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Tue, April 24, 2007 - 3:24 PMAs a matter of fact I did read this post, and from what you people say, this makes me angry. Why don't you respect his personal space. He has every right to live his own life or e-life (which should be looked at equal as a life). So you all think you should "cut off his access"? Well if you really intend to do that, then he has every right to say "Fuck You!" because you are affecting his pursuit of happyiness. He has friends on WoW, he explored new places and meant new people on there. But because you people don't like it, you all feel that he has to give up what he likes, just so he can live a life as YOU see fit? Fuck that! If he wants to "get out" then he should do it on his own terms, without rubbing it onto him. He has a right to get angry when you complain to him, because as I always said: It's his own time, so it's his right.
The idea of giving him an Ultimatum is really disgusting. He doesn't deserve that. You need to accept the fact that he chooses to spend his time on WoW. He has friends, activities, and well a life on there. So the idea that you want to end that, really is disgusting.
It's his right. -

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Fri, April 27, 2007 - 11:07 PMof course never mind that he is greatly saddening to all of his family and whats left of his friends.
And the fact that his parents are housing him.. at 28 years of age. That is a rediculous situation that none of his loved ones should have had to got involved in. Just because he chooses to do something, doesn't make it right, and using your logic, it would be wrong for a parent who's 40 year old kid who does acid, to be mad about him doing acid. Would he have a right to be mad? perhaps, but his loved ones have just as much right to be sad and worried.
you seem to forget the fact that he is a burden to his family at this point as well.

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Mon, May 21, 2007 - 1:05 AMYou've opened my eyes Daniel. .
I shouldn't infringe on my offsprings personal freedom, even when it may cause him harm. Im a Proud single parent. Lastweek me and my kid went to the candy store for Rasberry-drops. While we were there he saw that they also sold Cocaine. He wanted some, he even threw a tantrum. So i let kids be kids and bought some.
He's now hopelessly addicted, Bless the little Tyke.
Each and every one us persues happiness, But at what cost? Friends in a Virtual world are not the same as the real world.

Re: How to help someone see they have a problem
Tue, May 22, 2007 - 11:43 AMi totally agree with you. My boyfriend who is 21 sits at all day playing Warcraft. He doesn't have a job cos he doesn't think he is ready for one so while i slave away teaching he sits playing a shite game. Not only does he play in the day time but then when i get home from work he still plays. .. with those nerdish headphones and microphone. I mean how geekish!!!!
He drives me insane. JUST GET A JOB AND GET A LIFE
i love him but sometimes i wonder. We are renting a house at the moment but were going to start looking to buy this summer. How can we when he would rather waste his money on warcraft rather than get a job!!!!!
grrrr.
sos for moaning
